An Investment in the Future of New Yorkers

Metropolitan Jewish Health System (Metropolitan) is widely respected for its innovation in the care of the frail and chronically ill. From published research and health policy scholarship to the development of new services and techniques, Metropolitan has a century of contributing to the health and well-being of New Yorkers.

Metropolitan’ most significant new research and development initiative is in the area of palliative and end-of-life care. In addition, we are integrally involved in major quality improvement and evaluation efforts throughout Metropolitan Jewish Health System’s member agencies.

Metropolitan researchers were central in the development and early implementation of Elderplan®, one of the first Special Needs Plans (SNP) in the Greater New York Metropolitan area, and HomeFirstSM, a Medicaid health coverage plan that helps nursing-home-eligible seniors stay independent at home for as long as possible.

Our promise to our patients is in our mission

To design, coordinate and conduct an interdisciplinary research and development program that:

  • Enhances understanding of the health needs of the elderly (and younger persons with chronic, disabling conditions), as well as gaps in their care;
  • Develops and evaluates new methods, models and systems of care; and,
  • Generally contributes to and promotes the well-being and independence of the elderly and other people in need of chronic care services.
