How You Can Help
Metropolitan Jewish Health System encourages personal involvement--whether
you're assisting in the care of a loved one or trying to make a difference
in your community. If you would like to help us help area families,
please take a minute to read how you can make a difference.
To learn about other ways you can help your community, call the Metropolitan Jewish Geriatric Foundation at (718) 851-3712.
Hospice
Hospice volunteers undergo special training to learn how to understand and
meet the needs of patients and families dealing with terminal illness.
In these comprehensive training sessions, hospice professionals highlight
the role of volunteers as part of the interdisciplinary team. After completion
of training, volunteers are provided additional orientation and opportunities
to observe hospice professionals on an individual basis. Volunteers
then select an area of involvement, whether in direct patient contact or
in one of the program's many other supportive positions.
Hospice volunteers are encouraged to choose assignments that best suit their
time availability, skills and interests. There is no set time commitment;
however, volunteers are encouraged to give at least one to two hours
monthly in order to develop a sense of continuity and community. The average
volunteer gives four hours monthly.
Professionals, such as social workers, nurses and home health aides are
also needed as hospice volunteers. Others who can offer their skills as office
workers, artists, hair stylists, gardeners or compassionate listeners
are greatly valued. Hours are flexible, as we offer evening and weekend volunteer
assignments in addition to longer-term, limited-time and one-time projects.

Skilled Nursing Facilities
Friendly people are needed to visit with our skilled nursing facilities' residents
(helping to feed residents or transport them to and from activities
may also be included). Sometimes volunteers are also needed to man
the gift shop or to assist with other duties.

Medicare Managed Care
In the award-winning Elderplan "Member to Member" volunteer program,
our members share their different abilities with other members to help
each other out. Our member volunteers give a helping hand to other members
in need in many ways, such as walking with another member to Elderplan's
"University without Walls" program.
If you are an Elderplan member who would like to volunteer, call (718) 921-7909.
